Using USPS money order for eBay...

Arright, there's something on eBay I want, and I'd normally only use Paypal, but...I've only got a sixth of the money needed for the item on Paypal balance, and the money isn't in the bank at the moment to add to it. Now, I could deposit the money I have now (in hand, not in bank), and soon this week when I have the rest needed, but it takes a while to register in the bank. Time is of the essence before someone else nabs this deal.

The seller has excellent feedback - over 5,000 transactions and 100% feedback. Almost too good to be true. Paypal is preferred, says the seller, but USPS money orders accepted. I'm really tempted to do the money order thing. But there's not a lot of security with those, compared to Paypal at least.

Anything I could do to protect myself? Signature confirmation, certified mail, anything like that to add on? Figure with all the equipment dealing that goes on with our sort of interests, someone has experience with this.

Why not attach a credit card to your paypal account? If you don't have one I would figure something else out.

A money order is like cash. I wouldn't do it.

agreed, with a credit card you've got at least some protection if they scam you. Money order, not so much

I've paid for items on eBay with money orders before, but only if the seller has excellent feedback.

Regardless of what you decide, if you do want to use a money order, do it fast -- eBay isn't allowing them as a method of payment anymore. I think the new rules take effect at the end of the month if I remember correctly.

I had no idea they'd done that. I guess it's been a while since I've been on Ebay.

One other note, if you do decide on a money order - I would not use USPS Money Orders. If the Post Office loses your mail, you have to fill out a form and pay $5 and wait a month to find out if your money order has been cashed or to get a refund. Better to use Walmart: they're cheaper, and their deposit status can usually be tracked at no cost.

Ah, for safety sake, I think I'll just wait and put the money back in the bank. There'll be more deals if I miss this one. Meh.
