Using USB external drives on Apples

I'm wanting some clarification and was wondering if anyone can help me.

There seems to be two camps of people:

One group of people say that you must use firewire external drives on Macs when editing.

Another group of people say that it's okay to use USB 2.0 external drives on Macs.

Does it really matter whether you use a firewire or USB external drive when you edit? Does it really make a difference in the long run?

Yep- I find in practice USB-2 is much slower than Firewire 800 on a Mac. But don't take my word for it:

You can use a USB 2.0 drive as a scratch disk, but just like running a marathon in high heels, you may not get the performance you need and there are definitely better tools for the job. :)

USB for video is asking for trouble.

I've done it a couple of times, though, becaus I had no other options, and I managed, BUT with trouble. I knew where it came from, though and could keep working.

But basically you do NOT want to work like that.
