Using two seperate shots in one frame?

Hi there,

I was wondering if it was possible to combine two seperate shots in one frame. I want to film one shot and speed it up then film another shot at normal speed (both from exactly the same angle) and put them together so you cant see that they are two seperate shots on the screen at the same time. It's quite hard to explain so I have drawn a diagram: http://yfrog.com/5j65482106j

In this example I have a man running up to kick a chair. When he kicks the chair it will go flying off in slow motion without changing the speed of the man. To achieve this I would need to cut together two different shots, the one of the man running at 100% speed with the shot of the chair falling at 50% speed - how do I get both these different shots in the same frame?

I have posted this in the After Effects forum but am not sure if this would be the best program to do this with.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

if u can have three videos,

1- the background
2- the guy running
3- the chair video

then combine the three, after effects is cool for anything cheesy.

Just shoot one highspeed shot, bring two copies into your sequence, mask the halves and retime the side with the man.

I'll add this now... this is why the effects coordinator or other honcho is there on set to make sure things are shot properly. You MUST shoot with this shot in mind. Makes it SO much easier. Trying to marry shots post without this forethought is painful.

So, saying that... this question should have been asked before the shot was ever made.

You've got some good suggestions to get you going with what you have. Hope it works out for you.

Good luck,

I don't quite have a visual of exactly what you want to do... is it chair stationary, then as the kicker kicks, the chair goes off at slo-mo... that's easy, just drop in two clips in to the same composition, then adjust the size of each clip to take up the required portion of the screen. You may want to freeze frame the kicker's clip at the moment of impact, rather than worry about his follow through... or, tediously rotoscope and mask the last few frames of the man's foot on the follow through on the kick, so the resulting mask will have the 100% speed, while the chair flies slo-mo.

In the 'slo mo' clip, (don't know how you may have done that with either reinterpreting the footage for a different frame rate, or used some sort of time remapping...), it probably would be good to use a multiple of your full speed clip's frame rate. If you need to do the time remapping filter, then you'd have to put the clip that is to be slo-mo into its own composition, add filter, adjust parameters, then, drop that composition into the final output comp with the real time speed clip.

Thanks for all your help.

Sagemaster - that tutorial really helped! I now have a pretty clear idea of how to shoot this scene now.

J1 - The chair example isn't actually what I am going to do in my shoot but it is a more simple way to explain the same mechanics of the intended outcome of my scene.

I am in the process of buying some lights so should be ready to shoot this within the next month or so and would love to get some feedback. I am going to do a test shoot before hand but am still trying to find a good location. Sorry to be vague, you will all see my final product soon enough!
