using SD MM1 with Canon XH A1

for some reason, the A1 only allows either mic or line level for both inputs.

I would like to use my MM1 since it's a better preamp than the one on the camera. but i'd also like to use another mic, but it won't have the external preamp.

So, if I use an attenuator to switch the line level coming out of my mixer to mic level, will this defeat the purpose of the preamp?

thanks for any input

Can you adjust input levels on the camera separately? If so, then while not ideal, you can run the camera at mic level, and attenuate the output level of the MM1 accordingly. I would think that the lower you are able to run your camera input getting the signal from the MM1, the lower your noise floor for that channel will be.

Of course, another option is finding a way of getting the second mic up to line level before it hits the camera.

In a word, no. A mic level signal will require some form of amplification to raise it to line level. Typical mic level is considered to be -60db whereas line level will be 0db or more. These are just generalizations, but the fact is that mic level is significantly lower and without amplication, will most likely be barely registerable if the input is set to line and the mic is working without amplification.

thanks for the response. is it possible to get a mic up to line level without a preamp?
