Using real locations and real landmarks?

I'm writing a script for a low budget horror movie.

the title of the movie is taken from the name of an "exit" on the interstate than runs through our town.

On top of this, we are shooting footage of a confederate missile that sits just off the exit. We have actually already gotten permission to shoot footage of it, from the city chamber of commerce.

Do you think there would be any issues using the real exit number? or the landmark. The names of the towns and places will be fictional, only the exit number itself will be "real".

I thought this would be a cool way to garner some attention to our little town..

We actually have a place called "Crystal Lake" which was a wooded water park type area with a huge lake in the middle. When I was younger.. I always assumed that the "Crystal Lake" in friday the 13th was the one here.. (obviously it wasn't) but it was always cool to tell people that it could be and that Jason could be lurking in the woods!

A Confederate MISSLE ????? That I've got to see!

The only issue I can think of is if the landmark is privately owned in which case it would be a good idea to get a property release from the actual owner if it's not the Chamber of Commerce.

I am not a lawyer but I dont think you should have a problem with the exit number. As long as you have permission to film it and you are mentioning it with a fictional name.

I guess my comparrison would be "Lost Boys".

The movie was filmed in Santa Cruz and renamed Santa Clara. It features the signature of the town, the boardwalk and the amusment park.

here ya go!

I'm gonna go out there today to see how I am gonna shoot and NOT get all the fast food signs in the shot.. lol

I wonder if there is a way to change the signs to fictional names in post, so that I could actually show that this thing is in the middle of town.

Yes there is, but unfortunately it cant really be explained over a forum very easily. We do a lot of special FX work and have a few advanced compositing tools at our disposal but If you have the know how you can do the same just with after effects.

I'm told "Camp Hoover" is where it they shot "Friday the 13th" at least the "Crystal Lake" scenes. We stayed there for two weeks when I was a B. Scout.
