Hey Guys, I have a 16mm projector that works pretty well and I wanted to transfer some of the films that i have to digital. but what i was wondering is can i use the start up of the reels(where its just white) to lay on top of some of footage i have shot to give it a more aged film look? If so how would i go about setting it up in vegas? Thanks.

If you've already worked out how to digitise the 16mm film, then yes, it's definitely worth trying to get some extra value out of the otherwise useless white 'leader' footage. Although there are various artificial film scratch/damage effect generator tools around, many of them look a bit fake, and some stock footage firms actually sell various 'damaged film' footage for this very purpose.

In theory you just need to make the white transparent, so that only the scratches etc will be visible over normal footage in a lower video track. Start with the Chroma Keyer video FX and select white as your key. Twiddle with the threshold and blur settings. If the effect is too strong, you may also want to make the track slightly transparent.
