Using QT conversion to cut off black bars?

is there a way using quicktime conversion to cut off my letterboxing bars and get an H.264 compressed file in true 2.35?

import your clip in compressor, open it in the preview, create a new preset and crop the black bars and export it.

I have had problems with appliying effects like flash frame using the letter boxing bars, they seem to not stay black when the frame goes completely white, what is the best solution to this, should I do the thing you said to do in compressor to cut off the black bars??

After you have all your effects and every thing in place make a nested squence and then put a widescreen matte on that..
