Using Proxy files - going from SD to HD

Hi
I've cut my entire doc on SD because my system couldn't handle editing the HD files, with the idea of just swapping them out at the end to master, but it hasn't been working. My HD and SD clips have the exact same file names but are in different directories, if I change the names of the directories and try to fool PP into opening the HD files instead, it just crashes the program before the file can fully open. I've also tried taking clips offline and then relinking the media to the HD file, but then I run into the problem that the SD clip has one audio track and the HD (shot on HVX) has two so it won't make the exchange. I've tried all sorts of monkeying to get the the number of audio tracks to line up but to no avail, and I'm not looking forward to having to recut the whole thing in HD (I've upgraded my system during the project) Help!?

Re: EDL

Re: EDL

Are you saying export an EDL and then reimport it into my own system and link it to the HD files? Wouldn't I still have the same problem, won't the EDL have the number of audio tracks as well? Or did you mean something else?

If you're trying to import a lot of HD files into an SD project it's not unlikely that PP will lose its mind.

You might want try importing the HD files again. This time work off a fresh boot and depress and hold the "Shift" key when you open PP. Keep it held down until you get the welcome screen. It arranges the product in a neat little row and has solved some of my issues.

The EDL option sounds interesting but I've never used an EDL in PP so I cannot help you there.

Good luck to you.

i'm using CS3. maybe the better question to ask is what the right way of doing proxy editing in Premiere is, because the reading i didn on line before i started made it sound like this technique would work.

I dont do proxy editing because its an old fashioned workflow but I can see in your case why you did it...

An EDL should create a list that reflects your edit if the files have the same timecode. How were the SD files created and do the T/Cs match with the source?

The next issue is that the source of the files needs to be the same as specified in the EDL or you will have to go through the EDL with a text editor and point at the source files.

EDLs were really designed to work with a "tape based workflow" and could be problematical in a HDrive /file based workflow.

Maybe easier to match edit the Sd to an HD project. How long is the show?

the HD and SD files have identical file names and should have identical time code, i suppose the only way to find out if the EDL swap would work is to try it. my doc is about twenty minutes long, it would be exceedingly tedious to go back and recut the whole thing with HD files but I may not have a choice. my other concern is that even with a quad core and 4G of RAM is that it's still not playing the HD that well, any thoughts

What sort of HD files are these?

How did you produce the SD files from the HD source files?

Should be easy to see if the T/Cs match. Open same file in the project and read the T/C (or see media start t/c)
