Hi guys!

I am looking for a small monitor for handheld 3-axis gimbal - any recommendations? Do you ever use you phone as a monitor? There is a software which connects your phone to you camera. I am just wondering what are the setback if you use your phone as a field monitor?

Thanks!

SmallHD's 500-series is compact/lightweight & gets mostly positive reviews.

Sound Devices PIX-E series is a bit bulkier/heavier, but also a recorder.

Both have 5" screens & can be difficult to see outdoors in daylight. Each can be had as HDMI only, or for a bit more money, SDI & HDMI.

Have you ever been trying to take a picture(or doing anything for that matter) with your cell phone and someone calls…? ; )

I don't know what your budget is, but I'm a big believer in buying purpose-built equipment.

If you only need 1080p, & want a monitor/recorder, you might look at Atomos' Shogun & Ninja lines, though I'd feel more confident with Sound Devices PIX-E (plus it's 4K capable).

I think this depends a lot on the Camera's own internal software.
Some seem to do their link better than others.
I've heard folks say lag time was worse on some than others. That's going to be important.

You put the phone in AIRPLANE MODE when you don't want calls and texts to interrupt it. Pretty sure that the Bluetooth connections will still work in Airplane Mode, yes? No?

I have 4 different dedicated monitors of both 5" and 7" sizes, but the idea of just using an iPhone 6 or one of those Samsung Galaxy's or something sounds like a perfectly good solution. Just whip up or buy a velcro sun hood and a second cheap phone case to stick the velcro on.

Now, can some of these NON-Apple phones accept and HDMI input? I thought so far they were almost all OUTPUT only.
