Using Panasonic then Sony tapes in my DVX100B

I usually use the Panasonic tapes, and I've heard that by mixing both Sony and Panasonic the differing lubes used by each company will be corrosive to the tape and/or the camera... is this true?

A friend used a Sony tape in her camera, but her computer sucks so she can't capture it without skipping frames for some reason... would me capturing it from the Sony tape with my DVX screw me (since I've been using Panasonic)? Or does the problem come from recording onto the tape, and not capturing from?

Sincerely Word,

Sounds to me like it's her computer and not the capture device.

I personally would never run a sony tape (or anything other than MQ's) through my DVX unless it was something that absolutely couldn't be avoided. Sony uses a wet lube, Pany uses dry lube. The risk is more of a gunking up of your heads (which can be cleaned, by a professional service center), and not a corrosive issue(I believe).

Yeah. Dont mix them.

I had a friend who wanted me to transfer some DVCAM footage to Mpeg. The first two minutes of his tape was unusable (dropout central). I asked him if he had been mixing tapes (specifically Sony and Panasonic).

He said he had used panny most of the time but had to buy a Sony at a high street store as he had left his spare tape stock at home.

I reckon this was the problem with the start of the tape as it was the first problem he had encountered on his PD170.

Seriously DONT do it. I did ONCE and had to get the heads cleaned professionally.... waste of time and money.

Start Sony - Finish Sony ??

Start Sony - Finish Sony ??

I am using Sony Dv tapes on my dvx. Not mixing. Is this ok as long as I now stick with SONY? - arigato!

Why don't you use your friends cam and tape on your computer. Do you have to use your dvx to try to capture their tape on your comp?

NEVER USE SONY TAPES IN DVX100 beleive me

NEVER USE SONY TAPES IN DVX100 beleive me

OK I'ts seem you guys here trusting sony tapes going to have big problemes beleive me. Sony tapes use a lot of Phosphor on their tapes thinking they are alone in this world. I did and i broke my heads on the cam so 1000$ They already had pursuits law with JVC for this kind of thinks and its not the only one my konika minolta d200 use a sony ccd with a special glue used by sony in the past and cause the central unit dead i have this problem too. So believe me everything that is not sony and that they touch is morphing to ****. For dvx only use hi quality pana tapes Advanced master tapes that create less to none dropframes. for the bateries the dvx users bat are very good execpt the plastic on the 5600 is cheaper that the real 5600 of pana and plastic wa o on the 5000 release. But if you manipulate with care they are very good. Thats all for my recomendations...
and for sure forget everything about sony if you have tapes shooted with sony tapes rent a sony cam and transfert them. dont use in dvx (Maybe another tips about firewire lol dont use 6 pins computer firewire 4 pins is safe) i fired mine lots of mistakes i wanted to share with you to prevent

I just don't agree.
I think it can never be really proven one way or the other. Bottom line is DONT MIX. I've been using SONY since day one because you can't buy pani at any corner store and that can be a problem when you're out and shooting doc films, but you can get sony anywhere. But I can't and won't go back now. I've shot over 200 hours with them without a hitch so don't listen to the die hards who just get whats most expensive because people told them to. Decide WHY to do something not just that "it costs more so it should be better". Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

If your a serious shooter you stock you consumables ahead and don't shop at the "corner store." Tapes can be delivered by UPS or FEd Ex overnight in an emercency and if your planning a serious shoot stock up. BTW if you admit the use of non-panny tapes during warranty they can (and will) charge you for a head replacement!

I am with you on the lack of proof that the phospher, etc. is the culprit but don't discount the importance of using recommneded tapes. And the most expensive isn't a requirement. Also no mixing is sound. I use sony for our Sony Fx1 and Pany for my DVX100b and with the HVX200 when we use tape with no problems either!

Hi guys,

I just became a new member of the the DVX community.
Own a 4 month old DVX100b that works so nice, that I bought a second one today. (Wife not very happy)

Reading the entire 16 page thread regarding the cleaning of the unit, I found a lot of informative information.

I found that everyone has either had "dust residue"(Panasonic) or 'gooee gunt"(Sony)

Before I run a single second on my new camera can you say which is better Wet or Dry tapes

I have been using Panny tapes for the first camera and I have not had any problems.

But then again I only found out about this forum recently.

thanx
