Using On-Cam mic and lav at same time

I'll be doing some interviews in the coming months. I was thinking of leaving the on cam mic on ch1 and putting the lav (or shotgun depending on the situation) on ch2. My thinking is that I will be able to hear the questions/comments that I make that might be relevant, but it will be isolated from their response, which will simplify things in post. Is this a common practice? Is there a reason not to do this, or perhaps a better way to accomplish the same thing?

It will mostly do what you want, yes. You may still hear yourself on the lavaliere as well, depending on how sensitive and directional it is. But yes, you can certainly use the on-camera in connection with a lavaliere or shotgun for the purposes of using the on-camera for ambient, etc.

If the lav does pick of some of your voice you could always put a gate on it in post to clean it up a bit. Just my .02
