Using music in your movies

So I have started planning for my next short and I would like to get some classical/instrumental music for it. Like Debussy, Bach stuff like that. Here are my thoughts on what to do to get them. Let me know what might be best and what i should do to make sure it is all legal.

Buy the sheet music and have it rerecorded.

Buy a version of the song with its copyright

Try and contact the copyright owners and ask for permission.

This would be a student project so there is no profit.
Thanks for any help guys.

classical music like Bach is free to use if you perform it yourself or hire a performer and create your own recording but using a CD will be difficult to get the rights to.

Another option is to use Finale 2008 and scan your sheet music and use soft synths to reproduce it, as long as it is allowed through the company that owns the sheet music.

Recording music specifically for the film can be a very costly undertaking, even if you're only hiring a small string quartet.

Look through a few production music libraries. Rights negotiation will be a much simpler affair with a production library, at a fairly reasonable price (especially compared to recording new music). Here are a few that may have what you're looking for:

Look in your area for wedding performers; no, not adam sandler types, but string quartets

Many times they have their own CD's of pieces they have performed.

Also check forums for this type of musician. You'd be surprised who will glady let you use their work for a credit !

Check out magnatune.com - they have a number of excellent classic releases at very reasonable licensing fees.

I agree with Steve House, magnatune.com has a great variety of music for what you want and licensing to exactly fit your needs and a minimal budget.
