Using laptop as external monitor on HVX200

There seems to be plenty of information about transferring video directly from the HVX200 to a laptop using firewire. But what about if you only want to use a laptop as an external monitor for shooting 1080i or 720p? The next best option maybe is to use the composite video out for a lower res realtime display using a video tuner card in a laptop. Does anyone know if that allows you to see what you're recording very well?

Dedicated HD LCD external monitors are very expensive, and I read in another post that DVD players don't work so well as cheap alternatives.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to monitor what you're shooting on the HVX200 on anything larger than the tiny dim on-camera LCD screen without spending an arm and a leg? Thank you much!

Adobe OnLocation.

I cannot find words to describe my love for OnLocation.

Great app! I love this kind of workflow.

For indie film-making, this is da thing. For event, ENG, and general run-and-gun projects, it probably won't be so good.

With OnLocation, you monitor and record simultaneously on set, directly to an ext. HDD. No tape capture or cards offloading. Just direct recording onto the HDD.

You can use an ext. monitor, connected to the laptop, or even the laptop's LCD [as a last resort] for monitoring.

And many more.

I wonder if we're gonna see similar workflow for the Scarlet?

Streaming redcode RAW through an eSATA or something like that?

And compatibility with a future version of OnLocation?

That would be truly great.

Okay.I need help,please.
I just bought HVX200A and I have no more money to buy a monitor but I need one.I have a macbookpro with FinalCut.
How can I use it as a field monitor?
We are shooting soon.
Thanks a million

Thanks dude. We will try it this weekend. If it works great. If not o well.
Thank you so much.

Okay, I understand that Adobe Onlocation is the program to use by reading abit about it, however im still unsure of what kind of laptop I need. And if I and the
original poster was looking for the same thing, so just to clerify maby you could
verify if this is correct :)

Iam standing in one spot, filming using a tripod. I wish to use something bigger than my HVX200 LCD while filming / playbacking.

Thats where I think I should be able to use the laptop and the hvx200 togheter, so Iam filming, and seeing what Iam filming on the laptop screen.

Does that require a really really badass laptop, cause I read on adobe's website you had to have like 2.4 dual core and 2gb ram, which is a pretty expensive laptop I guess. Or could I use something like 1,66 dual core 1gb ram ?

Also, does the quality decrease alot?

and yeah, Im real slow, and I need to do this to properly understand, hope you won't get bugged by it.

Thanks.

Well, the adobe recomendation is for the "ideal" system... I use an old HP (pavillion Z6500) wich has a AMD XP procesor (1.8 Ghz), 1 Gb RAM, and a external USB HD, this is enough to see, analyse and capture almost anything from SD to HD 1080.

By the way, you can use a 100 feet FireWire cable to get Sd signal but no longer of 15 feet for HD (1080 or 720).

The HVX200 does not stream signal in any of the two Native format (1080PN or 720PN)

If all you need is an external monitoring capability, I just bought a portable DVD player from Circuit City that has video and audio inputs and also a USB input. I can use its 8.5" screen as an external monitor for my DVX100a. It also has a digital audio output -- connect it to a home theater for 5.1 surround sound. Cost was only $109.

Alright, that would make my laptop good enoght probably!

Sounds like a real good deal (The 8.5 monitor)! Have to check if its HD compatible!

Thanks for sharing your personalexperiences, and not just feeding me facts, I understand better that way!
