Using HD TV as monitor - which connection from HPX171?

Hi

I'm planning to purchase a good brand HD LCD TV for use as a field monitor.

The various ports on the HPX171 are

1. Composite (is that the right term) (white red yellow).
2. SDI OUT
3. 1394
4. Component Out

So my questions for you gurus are as follows:

Would output from the Composite port be HD?
What is Component out?

And..

Is there a way to come out of the SDI into an LCD TV and get full HD on TV

Basically what is best way to connect HPX to an LCD Tv so footage can be monitored in HD.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Composite output is SD so that is a non-starter if you want HD. The easiest solution will be component output. Not every TV has component input since HDMI is becoming the standard TV interface, so check your specs. Component out to a HDTV will look great, though using a TV is not going to be much good for judging color. The IQ between Component and HDMI on a TV are similar, but component is analogue, and HDMI is digital. You would need some type of breakout box to get from HD-SDI to HDMI or component input on a TV since it isn't a typical interface. HD-SDI has potential to be higher quality, but going into a typical HDTV input, I don't think it will do you much good since the component signal will render out about as much as most TVs can do for resolution. You may want to look at products from Black Magic and or Matrox for breakout box solutions, and or look at dedicated field monitors also which will improve your quality, and then HD-SDI becomes the signal of choice.
