using hd in a sd timeline?

I have a doc that is 99 percent 4x3 SD with one interview in HDV (16 x 9 of course). Fairly new to fcp, but I want to keep the clip at HDV size and play around with the framing in the SD timeline. Can I use it and reduce it to the size I want in a SD timeline? Or do I have to go into After Effects or even compressor to change the sizing? Right now it reduces the HDV clip to a SD 16 x 9 clip, but I want to make it 4 x 3 and I think I have room to adjust to make it work (reducing the clip scale and moving around).

Can I do this inside FC?

Thanks,
john

Double click on the clip in the timeline to open it in the viewer. Then click on the Motion tab- adjust Scale and Aspect ratio.

Hi Noah.

When I drop it into a sd timeline, it shows up at 100% and 16x9, meaning it looks like a sd 16x9 clip. So I am blowing up the clip instead of reducing it to make it fit sd 4x3, which of course the quality goes to pot. I thought if I drop it in a sd timeline it would show up larger than what I need and I would be reducing it in scale to make it fit. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Try clicking the reset buttons for scale and aspect ratio- the x in each motion category.

Here are some pics to help show what I see:

This is HDV on the left side and sd 4x3 on the right in a sd sequence.

After I edit it in the sequence it is 100% full, but still only 16x9 in the sd timeline.

Hard to see, but this shows the scale is already at 100 percent

So am I doing anything wrong or is FC adjusting the sizing to fit in the timeline I am using. Which is a great feature (HD and SD together in a timeline), but I am wanting to play with the HDV and make it work as a sd 4x3 clip by reducing and resizing.

Thanks again for jumping in Noah.

Open your HD clip in Quicktime and type "command-I" on your keyboard to bring up the info pallet. What size in pixels is your HD video? I'm guessing it's not actually HD.

Hi Mitch.

You are right! Guess I originally loaded it as SD 9coming out of the camera I guess?). Must have tried to out think myself when digitizing :-)

Tried the other way and works fine. I wonder how many people actually shoot HD to deliver SD and build it in an SD time line to reframe shots or blow up for a CU?

Thanks for the help.
