Using footage you shoot for someone else...

How do you handle clients you shoot for and generic b-roll footage? Meaning, do you ever have in your contract that the footage you shoot for their project, you have the rights to keep a copy and use generic nondescript footage as you wish? I have done this with some clients (especially low budget ones), but want to include it in the contract with new clients. Is this acceptable? Do you do this? (sorry if it has been covered, please reference thread if it has).

Thanks much.

It's totally up to the client. I've never had a client allow me to use THEIR footage for something that I want to do. You could ask for permission, but I would be prepared to tell them what you're planning on doing with it.

Putting their footage on your demo reel is another story, but still, I have always asked first just to make sure to keep things kosher.

I am thinking along the lines of adding it to RevoStock. I am the shooter/producer/editor, so the project is my control, but I have not pursued it with a high paying client. If I am in a low paying gig, I let them know I use the generic footage for whatever and they don't care. But now I am charging more and don't know where to draw the line.

Photography is easy, because I throw that in for free.
