Hi THere,

Trying to test different primes for DOF effect just wondering if a Nikon Digital SLR would have the same effect as with a 35mm Adaptor so i can test the primes before the shoot so i know what to use,

Trying to be a Learn to be DOP

Cheers
Ash

If you took a picture with a nikon dslr (not a full frame) and cropped it to 1.85:1 you would get very close to the fov and dof as super35. (keep in mind that f-stops dont equate to t-stops though)

Also, consider if your 35mm adapter is a full-frame 35mm or cinema 35mm.

And you are a dop! Your from NZ!

whats a t stop Hunter ?, im shooting with a D50 i hear they have a smaller chip so that makes a 50mm a 75mm anything to consider here ?

Also what is the difference between FF 35mm and Cine 35mm is it just the aspect of the FOV?

Most cinema lenses have T-stop values instead of F-stop values, thats because F-stops only measure aperture size while T-stops also factor in actual light transmission. T-stops are nice for maintaining consistent exposures.

About the 50mm turning into a 75mm: a 50mm is always a 50mm lens, weather the chip size is a foot or millimeter, what changes is the field of view. A 50mm lens on a nikon dslr (APS-C size sensor) has the same field of view as a 75mm on a fullframe 35mm sensor. The multiplication factor for measuring FOV when comparing Full-frame to a nikon dslr is 1.5x. Which is approximately the same multiplication factor as full frame 35mm (still camera) to super35mm (except the difference in aspect ratio)

APS-C (most dlsr) sensor size is about 25.1 × 16.7. (I say about because the APS-C standard allows for varied sensor sizes)

Super35mm is 24.89x18.66mm

Whew!

Thanks Hunter I think i got it, so along with a APS-C giving the FOV of a 75mm the effect of the DOF is greater also ? like would it equal the DOF of a 75mm?

One More question is the effective size of a 35mm adaptor (GG) full frame or would it also have a crop factor ? Does it change between adaptors?
