Using an OLD minidv cam as a deck?

I don't have the cash for a nice deck like the Sony DSR-11 right now. First, I have to buy other more essential accessories... like a tripod. So I was just going to settle for using a minidv cam.

Before I got my DVX100A I had been using a 1 chip Sony TRV11 for 4 years. It's seen a lot of action in those 4 years; many hours and lots of different tape stock. Can I just pop in a head cleaner tape, and then start using it with my master quality panasonic tapes and not worry about contaminating them? I see other people say they bought cheap, USED minidv cams off eBay as their decks. They must be doing the same thing, right?

Or should I try to find a cheap, NEW minidv cam? Does it matter?

It shouldn't matter. I use my leisure camera a panasonic pv-gs120 to capture my footage, this is the camera I've taken camping, on train trips and where ever i go and I capture just fine from my dvx. One the tape has been shot you can't really ruin it by putting it through another camera because it would just be reading, as long as you don't get a tape jam you should be fine.

I meant ruining the tape in the sense that I couldn't put it back into my DVX100A... for fear of contaminating the heads.

I've never heard of that happening, in camera VD? lol Anyone else ever heard of this?
Also, answer my post in your dingle thread on your boards damnit lol.

Are you guys reading my question? Are those used cameras you are using, and did you have the heads professionally cleaned or did you just pop in a head cleaner tape before you started using it with your Panny MQ tapes? And do you put your MQ tapes back into the DVX100A after use in the cheap, deck camera?

I use an old sony DV cam as my deck, never had a problem putting the tapes back in my DVX. I did clean the heads on my sony before using it and now I only use MQ tapes.

Clean the heads and I'm sure you'll be okay.....

I use a cheap Panasonic PV-GS9 as a playback/FCP capture device all the time. It saves additional wear and tear on the heads of my DVX. I do, however, run a cleaning tape on the GS9 quite frequently. Never had a problem with tapes going between the two cameras.

PROBLEMS, YES: I bought a bottom- o- the- barrel Samsung miniDV camcorder, new, and ANY TAPE I take out of it clogs others' heads. *LAME*. Sending it back, after many tests.
