Using a Sony Tape?

When I first got my camera, I remember hearing 'never use sony tapes in the DVX, as they leak some kind of oil or something that can damage the camera...'

Is this true and important? I have some important footage that a friend shot on a Sony pro tape, miniDV. I'd love to be able to edit it now, but is it risky? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

Re: Using a Sony Tape?

This has been discussed and the general answer has been that some people use Sony tapes w/ no problem. Some people get dirty heads from them. Overall though, I don't think it is recommended. Try and get your friends camera to capture. Either that, or run a head cleaning tape in your cam afterwards.

Re: Using a Sony Tape?

I use Sony tapes exclusively in my DVX as my DV tape chain was established long before the DVX came around. I had a Sony PD-150 and a JVC DV-500 to shoot with and a Sony DSR-30 VCR to feed my NLE.

I still use my DSR-30 in the loop. Plus, I have lots of Sony DV tapes libraried that occasionally make their way back into my NLE for one reason or another.

Therefore, I'm sticking with the "tape that leaks oil". lol :D

Re: Using a Sony Tape?

its just a matter of finding a tape and sticking with it. Dry v/s wet lube. If you start w/ sony, stick w/ it. If you start w/ Panny, stick with it. I have one DVX which has had strickly sony Excellence in it and one with strickly Panny MQ in it. No troubles, well due to tapes.. :D
