Using a PMP / video player as field monitor?

With all the new media players coming out nowadays with excellent (an fairly large) lcd screens and great battery life, has anyone considered using one as a field monitor? Some (like the archos 5xx ) have video inputs and many have higher res screens than many camcorders - and they go for hours on a charge and dont weigh much ... also they probably cost less than proper monitors .. so what are the cons to this setup??

Nothing but cons. Don't wast your time or money. I tried what you want to do and it's no good. You will hook it up to you're camera and instantly be disapointed and find it to be utterly useless.

why exactly? is it the generally poor lcd's employed by them or the small screen size? (or both?)

that's exactly what i meant - i guess the concept's the same - the downside being that those screens often limit at 234 lines of resolution and are hard to calibrate (if not impossible) .. but from a price standpoint it seems like a perfect solution
