Using a New External Hard Drive

Currently, I have all my FCP files on an external hard drive. These include:

- Audio Render Files
- Render Files
- Capture Scratch
- Thumbnail Cache Files
- Waveform Cache Files
- Autosave Vault

However, that hard drive is just about full. I purchased a new external hard drive and I want to start using that for all of the above.

Two questions:

- How/where do I point all of the above to the new hard drive and can I still leave all of my old project files on the original hard drive?

- If I want to move everything to the new hard drive (it is twice as big as the original) is it just as simple as a copy and a paste or will that mess up all the old projects?

Thanks for the help,

Chris

In your Final Cut Pro menu, under System Settings, you can change your capture scratch & other scratch drives to the new drive so every thing you do in the future will point to the new drive.

The old files you shouldn't have to do anything, the FCP project file points directly at the old drive so they don't need to go anywhere.

I wouldn't move the files to the new drive unless you use them regularly, because you'll just wind up eating the new space faster. But if you have to, then it'll mess up the old files but it's pretty easy to fix, just right click on the file in the FCP browser and select "reconnect media" and "choose locate" and then find where you put it. If all the files are in the same folder, then FCP will use relative linking to find the rest of the files for that project that are in the same location.
