Hi folks, I'm looking for a bit of advice on my options here:
I've saved long and hard for my first shotgun mic - a rode NTG-1 - and will be using it on camera most of the time (I know - not recommended, however I'll be single-handedly doing a fair bit of outdoor run & gun stuff, so it's my only option at this stage)
The catch is that I live in a rather windy location - in order to shoot outdoors I purchased a furry windshield (a Rode "dead cat").
Here's the problem - If I use the mic with the DVX's microphone clamp - the dead cat fur is clearly visible in the top right hand corner of the footage
Zooming in past about Z35 gets it out of the shot (when using letterbox or squeeze) however this isn't really an ideal solution.
By my guesses, I need to have the mic about an inch higher than the standard clamp on the camera.
I thought that perhaps adding in a clamp-mounted shock mount like the Rode SM5 might elevate it a bit, however I don't know if it will be enough (I have no idea how much higher these shock mounts seat a microphone) The other thing is I don't want to waste cash on something that won't do the job.
I want to keep the accessory shoe free (as I'm mounting a light to the camera) and I'd prefer being able to disassemble everything to fit in my backpack
Do any of you know if there's anything else like a longer arm for the DVX microphone holder or some other simple solution available?
Thanks in advance
Peter
