Using a DP with no DVX experiance.

I am considering shooting a short next month and would like to use a DP that I know and have a high regard for, however he has never shot with a DVX, we will have a 100 not a 100a. I will be directing and am by no means a shooter, but I will have a working knowledge of the camera. Should I be concerned with anything? I feel pretty confident that we will be ok, but is there any advice you can give? What are the down sides of shooting with a 100 and not the 100a?

Thanks a lot everybody.

Yeah, be concerned and then have him shoot a little test footage first. Then if all else fails, have him read the manual.

Has he been shooting on video (especially mini-DV) before?
As mentioend he should shoot some tests and become awaree of the operation and pitfalls.

I am going to arrange for some test footage for sure. Any pointers on a good procedure. We won't be able to create shots that are similiar to the content to be shot for the short.

Most of his experiance is with DVCAM, specifically the DSR 130 I believe. Though I know he has shot some Mini stuff as well as film, so I think he should aclimate well.

Get Barry Green's DVX book, and give that to the DP a week or two before the shoot. He will be a pro with the dvx in no time.

Thats good advice... I ordered mine today.

Thanks alot for the feedback. I think I will get Barry's book. I'll read it myself and then hand it over to the DP, that should cover our bases I think.

Its hard to anticipate a lot of things for this project. Its going to be be for the National Film challenge, so its up in the as far as style goes. For what its worth I think I am going to shoot 4:3, maybe I'll mark the monitors for 16:9 but we'll see. Going to try and keep it simple.

Thanks again.

As well as the DVD for scene file setting examples...
