Using a different camera to capture or import

Hello all,
I didn't find any specific info onthis. I recently became a DVX100A owner, I don't want to use it as a deck if I don't have to. This is to avoid the ware and tear. My question to all of you is: is there a problem using something other than my dvx100a to capture or import footage on to my mac? I will not loose quality? (since the footage is already written to tape) and will I have the pulldown settgins to deal with?

Thank you in Advance.

Re: Using a different camera to capture or import

No -- you shouldn't have any problems. The pulldown is already encoded on the tape too so there won't be any problems with that.

Good luck,

CaptM

Thank you Captain,I will give it a try tonight. I just didn't want to riun any of the footage on the tape.

Thanks

Even if it is progressive? Will the other camera treat it as progressive as well? Will the software capture it as progressive?

Thanks in advance

Fidel.

Re: Using a different camera to capture or import

Yes, if it works it'll be able to deal with capturing progressive fine since it's just coming across as firewire data and 'normal' video.

If you get a different camera just check the return policy. I had problems with a Panasonic GS9 not working (no timecode support) and had to return it but someone else here was able to get theirs to work.

Other suggestions:
Take advantage of the firewire to analog output/input on the camera.

Keep a camera hooked up for firewire output as well. Send the video output from the camera to a monitor (or a least a TV) This will let you see what the real video looks like compared to the computer screen, especially a LCD.

Get a camera with s-video output for higher quality.

If you get a camera which can capture external video then you could use it to capture from old VHS tapes or other sources.

If you get a cheaper Panasonic camera then you can share batteries and chargers with the DVX. (or look at them as backups)

??? er just wondering if I do a 2nd camcorder hook up to a TV/monitor, would I get to see the preview in the timeline in realtime too ? Or after rendering , and playback in the NLE, would the clip actually preview back on the tv through the camcorder, even though the clip isn't pumped back to tape immediately ?

Re: Using a different camera to capture or import

I've been trying to use Canon's ZR60 as an external deck for batch capturing without success. I've tried to set up the capture settings for the NTSC advance pulldown removal, capturing at 23.98 frames/sec, but I just get an error message that says there was a timecode break, which there isn't. When I leave the settings to the normal capture (29.97) settings, the footage looks jumpy because it was shot in 24pa. Anyone know why the consumer level cameras have problems capturing using 23.98?

It probably depends on your NLE. Final Cut Pro will display whatever your computer can render in realtime on a TV (through your DV cam), as well as anything you render out. I'm not sure about the others, but I imagine they have similar features.

**** Anyone know why the consumer level cameras have problems capturing using 23.98?***

Unless you spend the Xtra bucks for a 'real' HD cam, you're still only getting 60i, or 29.97. I have read from Panasonics website that you should set your capture settings to 23.98, but I tried EVERY possible setting and still got the results you stated. But using the preset "DV NTSC 48kHz (2:3:3:2) Pulldown" and with Anamorphic for 16:9, I get smooth playback both capturing, and previewing without the need to render.

Question, my stuff was shot with just 24p (not 24pa). So the above pulldown works for me. But 24pa I think uses a different pulldown method than the 2:3:3:2 method. For those interested, Panasonic has a link to good article by Steve Mullen that discusses the tech specs of what is really going on and explains the various pulldown methods:

Re: Using a different camera to capture or import

..the pulldown cadance you listed (2:3:3:2) is for 24pa. 24pn uses a standard 3:2 pulldown.

but if it seems to be working correctly.. more powaz to you :)

Re: Using a different camera to capture or import

Unfortunatel yif you captured 24p (not 24pa) and use advanced removal you're not getting pure 24fps images. Some of the frames captured will have split fields and playback will be a little odd. Try dumping out to DVD or adding 2:3 pulldown and dumping to tape to see it in real time in true video.

Cool! Thanks for the info. The boss shot the footage and was not familiar with the settings when he came back with the tapes. So, being used to normal NTSC footage, the 24p thing threw me for a loop. Not mention the digital squeeze and various preferences I get from others. He told me he didn't know what setting he used (norm or advanced) so I tried many different settings before settling for 2:3:3:2. So maybe he unintentially selected advanced then? thus my captures and playback are correct (at least visually) and do not require rendering?

does anyone have boss who knows what they're doing?:)
