Using a blank gun in Canada?

What would be involved in doing this? Some details, for reference:

Approximately 5 shots fired. All indoors in a residential building, never at any people.

I'm 16, but my dad has a restricted weapons license.

Is it possible to just rent one, sign the forms and have my dad supervise as he has a firearms license, or is it necessary to hire people to supervise? I would imagine if I need to have a special effects guy and police officer present that would get pretty expensive.

Alternately, what's involved in renting a good prop gun? I already know about airsoft, but the inexpensive ones aren't real/heavy enough and anything decent is extremely overpriced in Canada.

I'm no expert on this, but I can offer this: Make sure you call the police ahead of time and let them know that there will be shots fired (and maybe alert the neighbors, as well).

For what it's worth, we just completed a shoot where two different guns had to be fired (single shots) inside a house -- one actually being pointed at an actor. We resolved the problem easily -- both guns were empty, not even blanks. We added a sound effect in post for the sound of the shots. And we added a pretty decent flash as well. No danger, no disturbed neighbors -- and no permits needed.

Might be the best way to go.

Even in that case, I would still notify the police ahead of time. It might cost you a couple of hundred bucks to have a cop babysit the set for a few hours. But all it takes is one set of prying eyes to see something they shouldn't and call the police.

We had a set here in Colorado that was using some weapons in the middle of a forest. SOmeone saw, called the cops, and a SWAT team arrived. Your guns might not be loaded, but theirs will be.

EDIT: Don't assume a Stunt/SFX guy would be too expensive. You can plead your case to one and see what they charge. I know at least 2 here in COlorado that have been known to work dirt cheap (read: close to free) if you approach them with a smile and intrigue them with your cause. They come with props, connections and experience.

Using a gun with blanks for a film shoot in any language or country involves permits, schedules and the police if not a registered armorer also...Otherwise you may find yourself surrounded by cops aiming live guns in your face, that's if that say freeze before they shoot!! hehe,. don't risk it...

Yeah, here, if anyone see's a gun thinking it's real and reports it, you can expect a serious violent police takedown.

That said...
note that blanks have been said to kill at close range so obviously no pointing & firing at people.

Really, there is no need to actually have a cap go off other than for a post sound effect and that can be found on the web for free or pay if you want.

As for pointing an empty gun...if it's inside, and the curtains are closed and no one otherwise is going to see just film it.

Public display of a gun though requires, and you will find out the hard way, that you pre-notify the police.

It's not the sound that I'm looking for, it's the smoke and casing ejection. I guess I'll just put a fair bit of work into that digitally, and see if I can get permission to use a real unloaded pistol (which I doubt, but worth a shot).
