Using 72mm Screw-On Filters In Conjunction?

If I have a 72mm UV Filter and a 72mm Circular Polarizer, is it possible to use them both at the same time on the lens, or must I choose one or the other? Also, will the DVX's default lens shade (the plastic rim piece that says "Leica" on it) attach once I've applied a UV or Polarizer to the lens, or must I look elsewhere for lens shade (Matteblox, etc.)?

I'm pretty sure you can only use one screw on filter at a time. That's one of the advantages of a mattebox; multiple filters. Yes the lens shade/guard thingie will go back on. You can screw the filter in without removing it as well, but it is easier if you take it off.

You can stack filters if you want. The concern is that the further out they get, the more likely it can become that your lens will "see" the filter when you zoom out (called "vignetting"). Also, the further out a filter is away from the lens, the more likely that dust on the surface of the filter will show up "in focus" in your shot, especially if you're shooting at wide-angle.

I agree with Barry. I've stacked 2 filters on with no problems (UV and a Soft FX). But I'm not sure that I would do more then 2. You have to pay attention to the dust as you will be able to focus on the second filter, so any marks, dust, or whatever on the filter can show up in the shot.

The primary purpose of the UV filter is to protect the lens. Excessive UV light that causes image degradation issues is usually not a big issue. Plus, most glass filters will remove some of the UV spectrum, so it really isn't necessary to stack a UV on top of another filter.

I put the UV filter on as soon as I took my AG-DVX100a out of the box! I agree with Barry in that its main purpose is to protect the lens. That being said, I almost always keep it on at all times. If anything were to ever get scratched, I'd rather it be my UV filter over the cameras actual lens!

I also use a rotating screw-on polorizing filter ontop of the UV. No vignetting... Works great!
