Useless Rendering + MacBook Pro Performance

I am working with some .mov files for a project i am doing (not from the a DVX) I can preview them fine, but as soon as i drag them onto the timeline i HAVE to render them even though nothing has been added or changed... the raw footage has simply been dragged over. That is the most rediculous thing in the world. I have never seen that on any editing program in the last 10 years. I must have some setting wrong?

Along those same lines, if i were to add say a cross disolve to a clip then shorten the cross disolve i still have to render the entire section the disolve was originaly over. By default it makes it a certain length, and then makes that section red (unrendered), but even if you shorten it the red is still same same, longer, length... Some setting must be messed up in my FCP.. its 5.1 running on a MacBookPro...

Finally it seem slike my brand new macbookpro isnt running as fast as it should or something. For instance, all morning while just playing back the project it has been dropping frames. A dualcore 2ghz comp with a gig of ram should not be dropping frames... any idea about any of this?

The codec on the clips and the sequence are not the same. If both are DV format at same fps and audio (16bit 48k) then there's no rendering. If you put a clip ith animation codec or some other format in this timeline it will need to be re-rendered each time a change is made.

Make sure to render all (option-R) before trying to playback. Quit other applications and remove Norton if you have it. Make sure you have plenty of hard disk space. 1GB is minimum for full editing.
