I've got a bit of a dilemma: possibly restoring either a Sachtler Video 14 (75mm), or an older Miller 20 (also 75mm). Either one I choose will be mounted on a Gitzo aluminum series 5 tripod with quick level. Part of my dilemma is that I've used larger Sachtler heads almost exclusively over the years but whichever I choose now will support a DLSR rig. I hear conflicting reports about Sachtler's service, and I was initially impressed in contacting Miller, with their prompt communication and willingness to help. The Miller seems to be in a little better shape. Sachtler has a great reputation for quality.
Has anyone attempted to do a cursory dismantling of either of these, or any fluid heads to see possible damage, or extent of maintenance or cleaning needed? I feel if I send Sachtler in it will cost a bundle, don't know about Miller. I guess I could request an estimate and go from there. Just asking for advice and experiences. Maybe I should state that I am retired now and just doing videos for fun, a nice position to be in after years of slugging it in the trenches. Thanks for any responses.
