USB Hard Drive?

It works, but firewire is preferred. The reason is that USB 2's speeds are burst speeds which means it fluxuates during use. Firewire is a sustained speed meaning you always have that pipeline open.

Why would you need a 2nd FW bus just to edit with?

I can understand having a 2nd FW bus if you were capturing footage from camera to laptop via Firewire and concurrently dumping it to an external harddrive via Firewire, but I'm pretty sure it's standard to just use one FW bus when editing from an external harddrive.

Firewire 800 is preferable, but those harddrives usually cost more.

I was strongly recommended to get a FW card for FCP. I have the program and project files on my internal HD, and my actual captured footage on an external FW 800 drive. But the card I use, a Sonnet Allegro, isn't expensive and works well.

I just connect my external harddrive using the 800 port on my Mac. I haven't had any problems.

alright so if I were to use firewire for my hard drive would capturing video from my camera daisy chained to my hard drive work alright if I were using that hard drive to store the video?

You want to record directly to your mac from the camera? I know they're working on a DV Rack equivalent for Mac, but that's the only option I know. And I don't remember if DVR works with Intel macs.

I don't really understand what your saying... but what I want to do is connect my camera to an external hard drive using the firewire port, then have my hard drive connected to my Macbook Pro using its firewire port. What I want to know is, will that work well enough for me so that I may edit on the road?

For DV footage it will work. It is preferable to add another Firewire port via that ExpressCard slot, but the daisy chain method will work.

actually one more question. I know the faster the RPMs on the hard drive the better but how would 5400 rpms do for on the road editing?

No, I'd definitely stick with 7200. 5400 will work, but not reliably and you'll get dropouts. Plus the price isn't enough of a difference to warrant the trouble.

Why do you need your camera hooked up when you edit?

If you plan on capturing directly onto your computer (which I'm guessing is a Powerbook?), you should then definitely get another FW bus. You should look into getting a LaCie Firewire 800 PCI Card, put that into your PCMCIA slot and have your camera feed into that...while the other FW 800 bus feeds into your external harddrive.

You can't directly go from the camera into the external harddrive, because there is no capture interface. You have to use your computer as the 'middle man'.

But once you are done capturing the footage, you should be able to edit just fine on the road with a FW 800 external harddrive.

It also depends on what type of footage you are handling. If you could be more specific about that (as far as SD or HD), that would be helpful in figuring out how well you will be able to handle the editing process.

Cheers.

He has a Macbook Pro, so PCMCIA solutions won't work. I don' think the express card FW800s are available yet, but I could be wrong.

But the point is that you can plug your camera into the extra firewire port on a hard drive and tell FCP to capture to the FW drive.

thanks man for clearing that all up for me
