USB 2.0 vs Firewire for HDD

I didn't know exactly where to post this but since this is a forum for editing questions regarding FCP and I will be using FCP, so I figured this to the best.

I am trying to buy a external HDD for storing capture files and to edit DIRECTLY off it. I was wondering if USB 2.0 can do this. I know that a 7200rpm HD with Firewire can but can a 7200rpm HDD with USB 2.0?? Any ideas or product suggestions would be helpful!!

FireWire 800

FireWire 800

I would actually recommend getting something with FireWire 800. If you're using an older PowerBook (15"+), a MacBook Pro, a MacPro, or a PowerMac G5 then it's definitely the way to go. Check out www.macsales.com (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/) and take a look at their "Mercury Elite Pro" line. They offer double, triple, and quad interfaces at varying price points. The prices are a little higher than some competitors, but these things are incredible (and they look great too).

I did a lot of shopping around before buying my 500GB drive, and I couldn't be happier with what I purchased. As a bonus, delivery was super fast too.

USB 2 wont work. It has been explained to me by many people that USB2's data rate of 480Mbps is really only a burst rate, with the actual rate being lower. Firewire's 400Mbps rate is constant. so firewire is better, and even firewire 400 can be a pain in the butt to edit on. If you choose to go this route i would look into at least a firewire 400 unit. if you have the extra dough go for firewire 800. I use an eSATA solution to edit on, and it totally rocks.
