urgext xp instalation help needed :(

Hey guys, So I'm updating my mothers laptop from ME to XP. I have a CD a friend ripped for me but didn't give me any instructions. These are the folders on the CD:

$oem$
cmpnents
1386
oem
update

and a few win51 files

Any idea which folder contains what I need to upload XP to her laptop? I'm not very savvy with these things so if you can let me know where to look and what to run, I'd appreciate it.

The CD *should* boot, i.e. place the CD in the computer and restart the laptop. If your BIOS settings are correct it should boot from the CD (it may come up with a messaging saying "press any key to boot from CD." something like that)

Thats assuming you want to do a complete fresh install, this will of course wipe everything off your hard drive (unless you go dual boot).

As for in place upgrades, I'm, not sure as I've never done this, although I hear its possible, you should be able to see some option with the control panles to update possibly..

Hmm, it's not automatically doing anything so i have to open the CD and those folders pop up. I do want a fresh install, and want to wipe out ME and install this XP.
 
does the CD boot, when you leave it in and restart the PC?

can you check your BIOS settings to see if you can boot from the CD?

just tried that, no dice. Can you clarify what the bio settings are and how to change them?

alveraz - Be very careful. As Anhar said, everything your mom had saved on that computer could be deleted if you install XP.

okay the above (excluding boot & bootImage) should be the content of your disk. Now you don't necessarily need the disk to be bootable in order to install it but if your disk is bootable, it cuts the job in half. Now, before you proceed, make a back up of your important documents because when upgrading OS, you are not 100% safe. Anyways, what you need to do is create a MS-DOS boot floppy disk and boot the cd using this way.
