QUESTION ON STILLS/VIDEO LICENSING RATE FOR CABLE TV SHOW:
Hi,
A production company wants to license my photos and video footage of a courtroom trial for an episode of a business-reality series on CNBC.
Licensing request is: “All media/worldwide/perpetuity with in-context promo. Non theatrical.”
The production company decided they wanted to license 90 seconds of footage from 25 clips I sent them(not sure which clips needed). They are asking for my rate for "All Media, Worldwide, in Perpetuity". They said footage varies but usually it's around $30 a second. We want to be fair but also want you to be aware of our typical rates/budget."
Is it standard practice to license a clip up to 10 seconds (with additional fee for additional seconds) instead of calculating the amount of seconds they want from 25 clips? What do you usually charge to license footage based on 10 seconds? What is the best strategy to avoid the in perpetuity requirement for a TV show or is this the best option: "all rights in perpetuity in *original context*" with additional language excluding any use outside of the original broadcast without prior, written authorization." Thanks
Several of the video clips(20s-1min clips) are exclusive.
- How do you respond to “all media” requests: do you ask for specific usage for the episode or multiply the licensing fee for “all media”?
- How would you charge for usage in the episode and in-context promo? Separately or as a package for each still/video?
- Do I need any special rights clearances for airing on a cable network show?
- Has anyone licensed video/stills using a quote pack rates(listed below in FQ7 section)? Is that a reasonable package deal that will fit cable tv show budget?
Below are a range of licensing rates. Have you licensed stills/video to cable show and would your pricing be similar to these rates? Any tips or advice on licensing to cable tv show would be appreciated.
