Urgent!! - Seagate Drive Failures

Really? OMG! Seagate? Wow. All I use is Seagate. Good thing I didn't buy one. I'm sure they'll fix this.

Thanks for the post because I've had my heart set on a Seagate 1TB drive and it's the Barracuda too. Isn't this supposed to be like their bestselling drive or something? Maybe I'll wait awhile. Ironically I never end up with a Seagate Barracuda. I always end up with one of their other drives so I'll stay away from these until this is all fixed. Seagate has always had a good track record too. I wonder what happened here or why they didn't catch this.

Here's a bit more info…

The problem drives appear to show the following info in the Mac System Profiler…

Model: ST31000340AS
Revision: SD15
Made in Thailand (sorry, PK)

Yeah, and apparently it's a feature that's costing a bunch of people who didn't back up their data a lot of money in recovery costs. Ouch.

Didn't something like this happen with Macs not to long ago? They had some kind of back up feature that didn't work or something like that?

From what I understand, the problem lies with the drive firmware. The new drives ship with corrected firmware, but Seagate isn't offering anyway to update the firmware on the failing drives. So basically, you wait for the drive to fail, then get it replaced under warranty.

We use the FreeAgent 1TB Barracuda drives. Are these freestanding units affected or are they integral to a particular computer?

I believe they're sold as bare drives for internal use/replacement of for sticking in existing enclosures. I haven't heard of any of those FreeAgent drives "bricking" and failing, but you might do a quick search on Seagate's forums.

Stephen - Is this happening to your massive RAID system you have? I'd hate it if two of those blue lights stopped flashing.

No way, PK. I believe they're all Hitachi drives, hand-selected and tested by the good folks at CalDigit.

The two I've got are inside the MacPro, they're set up in mirrored RAID. I'll be replacing at least one of them tomorrow.

I had my first catastrophic failure this year... a 500gb WD "mybook" drive... with my last backup being about 5 months earlier. Ouch... not good.

Back that sh*t up... early and often. HD is cheap... and it just doesn't take that long to ghost a drive and put it on the shelf.
