URGENT! Need help in converting/compression!?

I have a deadline to meet on a project and I am having a lot of trouble in compressing and converting my movie files.
Right now I have "dv" files and "mov" files of the movies (there are three movie files).
Each file is approximately 3.5gb and I need them to be only 1gb.
I need the files to be compatible with "DVD Studio Pro," which so far seems "avi" and "dv" files work.

I have tried numerous ways through quicktime to convert the files, but, everytime I make a "avi" file the quality looks horrible, as well as, when I make a "dv" file it's to large.

Does anybody have any suggestions, on what I should do?
Is there any programs that I can download for free that can help me?

(Note: I have tried to download the "Divx converter" but once it is installed it asks for a serial number and doesn't work.)

Do you have the full studio version of final cut? if so, why not use Compressor.app? (along the lines of output to quicktime reference file, compress to video and audio files with Compressor.app and then use in dvdsp).

If not, I think the process differs in that Compressor.app is not involved.

I suggest a look at the DVD_Studio_Pro_4_User_Manual.pdf
pp.42 - guesstimating bitrates
pp.62 - using the embedded encoder
(at least, those are the page numbers in the copy I have here)
