URGENT HELP NEEDED

I recently went to a telecine house to transfer 16mm footage to a panasonic MQ mini DV tape. They transferred it as DVCAM to the minidv tape and said it'll play fine if i transfer it through any regular dv camera to my computer. I tried using my cheap JVC DV camcorder along with my DVX, however they both have serious artifacting and other such problems, although i do see an image. Can anyone tell me what i'm supposed to do? It almost seems like it cant keep up with the transfer. I have a huge project due monday and im guessing i need a deck to transfer all the footage?? Please advise! Am i doing something wrong?

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

it appears avi. I'm just going into vegas and hitting capture video. Even when i try playing the footage on my dvx it looks terribly artifacted. Could it be that i just need a deck to properly play back the footage?

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

hmm...i had this happen twice. the 1st time the post house said i could use my digicam, to capture, so i believed them. ended up not working. 2nd time another place even after i told them MINIDV, the y still transfered it as DVcam. i ended up having them redo it cause they did it wrong.

anyway, is there any chance you can have them transfer it this weekend? are they open? if so get them to do it.

or, find a rental house that is open on the weekend that will rent some sort of dvcam deck, or camera....there is a place in burbank...http://www.hollywoodstudiorentals.com/ that might be able to help, they are open on saturday.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

thanks for the replies. oh man i just got back from CCI in Burbank... spent all day driving there... theres no way im going back up there this weekend. So do you think that the tape is OK? Is it just a deck issue? Am i damaging the tape in any way by trying to record it onto my computer?

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

deck issue, im pretty sure the tape is fine. what you discribe is like what i got when trying to capture DVCAM using a MINIDV camera.

if your project is really that important, at least consider calling them and seeing if they have a solution for you. it might be a good last resort.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

Try playing the DVCam tape on the DVX, and record directly (firewire) onto a DV tape in the JVC, then capture into Vegas from the DV tape, should fix your problem.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

It sounds like it's a DVCAM-format tape. DVCAM will play back in any Sony camera, so if you can find anyone with a Sony DV camera (except the original VX1000 and VX700) you should be able to firewire dub the tape. It should be fine.

Now, this is the odd thing -- I'm 99.99999% certain I've played back DVCAM tapes in my DVX100. I've got tapes that I know for a fact were dubbed on a DSR-30 (which is a DVCAM-only deck), which play back in my JVC deck fine and the "DVCAM" light comes on... and those tapes play fine in my DVX100. Perhaps they changed that when going to the 100A? Do you have a 100A?

In any case, find someone with any Sony DV camera. If you can't find anyone, just go to Best Buy or Circuit City or some place like that and ask them to just let you dub the tape over -- they should, just bring your own firewire cable.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

nope dont have the "A." Jeez im mad... i really wanted to start editing this thing. Looks like im going to have to spend $100 renting a damned deck now... grrrr

Thank you all for the help

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

Play the tape from the DVX to the JVC, watch the JVC's lcd, should show it's coming through clean.
If so, follow my previous post.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

hmm, I was able to play DVCAM tapes on my DVX without a problem. I had the sony pd150 for awhile and its DVCAM and played it back on the DVX with no problem.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

See, that's what's weird -- mine does too, but I've heard reports from other people that theirs won't. And Dan's problem sure sounds like a DVCAM playback thing...

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED

Barry, is your DVX the first version? I heard that people who have the 100a had problems with DVCAM playback. I could be wrong.. I have the first model. Intresting..
