urgent audio problem

Hi there,
as per usual my problem is an urgent one. My deadline is in a few hours. I'm doing final audio on a piece and was wondering whether anyone could recommend an audio filter to bring down background noise and up foreground vocals. The piece was shot in a restuarant and i can barely make out what is being said in forground due to clattering plates and b/g music.

Thanks, you guys have been lifesavers in the past. Nice one.

Hi Adam,

My experience with sound so far is that it is either recorded properly or you are more or less screwed :-)

I don't know anything about any filters, but maybe if you play a bit with high/mid/low tones you can get some pieces to stand out a bit more...Play around a bit, maybe you'll find something that works. Hope you get it straightened out...The best of luck!

You might find it difficult to deal with this using the filters in FCP. They are not the most intuitive filters to use, mainly due to lack of GUI and visual representation of frequency spectrum, etc. But if you can get it into a third party app such as Pro Tools or Peak, you could try to isolate the annoying sounds and back them off a bit. Sometimes a good multiband compressor can help. You'll also need to see if the various sounds are right in the frequency range of the voice because that will make it more difficult to bring the voice out. You'll never get it to sound great, but with some work you may be able to at least make it intelligible.
