UPS uninterruptible power supplies

Hey folks,

with the coming tornado/hurricane/storm season approaching -- I've gotten super paranoid about the power to my NLE's. I had a power outtage last week and lost an external audio interface and every season I seem to loose gear due to inconsistent power. At the very least, I'd like to eliminate AC as a factor for damaging electronic gear (as opposed to wear and tear). Whenever I loose a piece of gear, the nagging question is always -- "did I have a surge ?"

Anyway Is anyone using an "online" ups ?

This UPS is different than the standard battery backup systems you'd find in the Box Stores. (most likely to see a line-active UPS) -- whereas the online UPS actually takes your AC-converts it to DC-then back to AC, with no interruption of power. The power is actually coming from the batteries that your household AC is charging.

Here's a link to a wiki about UPS's:

Here's the UPS I'm interested in purchasing:

anyone with experience using these types of UPS's? Is it overkill versus a line-active UPS ? It's pricey but could be worth it to me for the peace of mind.

Another option/addition for protection is a service where local power company will install a device at the meter to prevent surges ($90) and a monthly fee to protect the whole house. Anyone using this service ?

Thanks,
Jay

I dont know much about the "online" ones, but I run a couple of the larger APC's which are of the line-active type ( I think ) and havent had a problem and am in an office that has surges, brownouts, and short power losses quite frequently without any problem at all. Using an APC rs 1200 and an rs 1300 for a couple of years now.

THe only problem we have had is that the batteries do go after a couple of years and need to be replaced. Last one actually went within warranty and APC replaced the whole unit overnight.

I went with an online UPS powersupply refurbed from UPSforless.com -- very good CS so far. Comes with new batteries wich should last for 3 years and replacements are $99.

At $350 was good deal -- just got it in today -- I plan to run (2) 22" LCD's (2) CPU's with internals HD's and with roughly 6-8 external HD's and tapedrive -- It's a Powerware Prestige EXT 1250VA Double Conversion Online Tower UPS --

once I get the spaghetti pile of power cords and strips plugged -- will report back how well it behaves.
