Uprezing SD Footage

I'm wondering if anyone has tried this before. I have no idea if this makes sense to do or if it is possible.

Has anyone tried playing an SD dvd on an upconverting DVD player/recorder and tried capturing the upconverted 1080i signal, via HDMI, to FCP for editing?

I'm curious if this will work to simply "Uprez" SD footage to HD for use in post.

I'd like to try this myself but I don't have either an upconverting DVD player nor a HDMI capture card. Are there such cards for the mac that can be used with FCP?

That would be a ridiculously high amount of quality loss- going from an MPEG-2 compressed video file then into... what from the HDMI output? Try Compressor on good SD video with frame controls or Episode or Shake or Algolith. Or shoot HD to begin with. No more excuses with all the cameras out there today.

I totally agree. The loss would be gross. I was just wondering if anyone tried it and what their results were. If for some reason, in a pinch, I needed to upres some footage and the only copy I had around was on DVD, would it be possible to do this procedure with "Ok" results. I'm understand it would be going DV -> MPEG2 -> whatever the upconvertor does to the signal. I'm not expecting amazing results but if upscaled SD DVD's look ok on a HD consumer plasma/lcd then what will it look like if I captured it into FCP?
