Uploading video...

I would like to upload my videos to a website that does NOT own it after I upload it. I heard that in Google/Youtube TOS a while ago that they own copyrights after you upload it. Is that true?

Can anyone suggest some sites like Youtube, or vimeo? that doesn't own right to your video after uploading? Or am I reading the TOS's wrong when it says, "All materials contained in this Website are the copyrighted property of Connected Ventures, LLC. All trademarks, service marks, trade names and trade dress are proprietary to Connected Ventures, LLC and/or third party licensors."

Also, can I upload my video to places like these and still be able to enter film festivals? or is that on a festival basis?

YouTube used to be very ambiguous about who owns the videos you submit. But they've gotten much clearer:

From the YouTube TOS (emphasis mine):

For clarity, you retain all of your ownership rights in your User Submissions. However, by submitting User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube's (and its successors' and affiliates') business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the YouTube Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each user of the YouTube Website a non-exclusive license to access your User Submissions through the Website, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such User Submissions as permitted through the functionality of the Website and under these Terms of Service. The above licenses granted by you in User Videos terminate within a commercially reasonable time after you remove or delete your User Videos from the YouTube Service. You understand and agree, however, that YouTube may retain, but not display, distribute, or perform, server copies of User Submissions that have been removed or deleted. The above licenses granted by you in User Comments are perpetual and irrevocable.
Not sure about the other similar sites, as I haven't researched them.

You could create your own website. Paying a monthly fee instead of paying for a full year would cost you less than ten bucks a month to control your own content. It's worth it and bypasses having to read the fine print of contracts.

Exactly. It's cheap as hell and you control the quality of your content, as well.

I agree. Being able to control things yourself on your own site is always bettter.

Although to play devil's advocate, I could see how someone who doesn't have the technical ability (nor the budget to pay someone else to do it) would rather use YouTube over doing it all themselves.
