uploading DVD footage into time line

can I upload straight from a DVD of home movies into my time line? or do I have to first convert to tape?

I don't know what editing software you're using, but probably you cannot capture straight from a DVD. You may be able to copy the .VOB files from the DVD to your hard drive, then rename them as .MPG files and edit them that way.
