i have two 22 inch screen and a 30 inch tv for my radeon HD 6870. I use the 30 inch v for full screen previewing in sony vegas. I do notice at highest preview quality, it can be slow at times playing back.

Any suggestion in upgrading from the 6870? Not worth upgrading or switch to the geforce?

The best way to get 2 monitors and 1 preview is to get a computer display card for both monitors and a video in/out card (preferrably HDMI) for the preview.
Blackmagic and Matrox nice product have products for this.
Also, it is good not to use computer monitor for preview since they rarely give realistic colors. Prefers a small TV, that gives pooper picture but probably closer to what the final customer will get.

We use a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card for external monitoring so that the internal video card only needs to drive two monitors.

My third screen is a rather shitty 30inch 720p Sanyo tv.

When looking at video cards, it is the memory that mostly affects the performance of 3 screens right? So going from my 1GB card to a newer 2GB card would make some improvement? I am thinking going from the Radeon 6870 to the 7870 or I might go to Geforce with what I hear how good the Geforce accelerates the rendering/previewing performance.

take nvidia, since most of progs today are optimized to use CUDA for acceleration.
a GT260 with 2 gig of ram is good enough and won't break the bank
