I have to reformat my system, its quad core, 4 gig and its got win xp. Its time for a reformat so if 64 bit is the way to go, I will update the system to win7. Your thoughts? The only thing I do on this box is edit video. thx
If your Windows application runs on 64-bit then Vegas 64-bit is the one to go for but with one proviso --- as yet, numerous Plug Ins will still only work in Vegas 32-bit. I loaded both versions on my Windows 7 64-bit system and both work OK (no additional cost) as this will allow me to transfer work between the two when I want to use a particular Plug In if it is available in only one version.
I also have both on my windows 7 Ultimate box. 64 bit is the way to go. The ability to use as much RAM as you can throw in the box is going to help video editing immensely. And W7 is more stable in general as MS stopped putting features into XP some years back (went into maintainance mode so only signficant bug and security fixes were added) and now XP is technically an unsupported system inside MS unless you have a special support contract (like a major industry or the military). Your only issues are going to be backward compatability with W7, as you may find hardware and software in your XP system that isn't supported by W7. Do some checking first to avoid frustration. But W7 has been great IMHO. I'm running many tools for editing, and none of them have had issues with the OS.
