Upgrading to FCS 3 from FCS 1

Hi,
I want to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 3 from my old version of Final Cut Studio 1. I have FCS 1 installed on my Macbook Pro and I just bought a new 27" iMac that I want to install FCS 3 on...

My question is, do I need to have FCS 1 installed on my computer when I install the upgrade? Or will it recognize my Apple ID as proof for the upgrade?
 
All that is needed is your FCS1 serial number when installing FCS3. During install of FCS3, typing in your new serial initiates another box to fill with your older serial. That's all. No need to install FCS1. The studio package is a hog for hard drive space anyway.
