upgrading to FCP 5

I was hoping to install it on my 2nd internal HD. Does that mean I'd need to re-install HD on that drive first?

Thanks.

Do an upgrade to HD for 5. You can't install FCP on anything but your system drive for it to behave properly. There's no reason to keep the older version.

Ben, lemme clarify. I have Panther and FCP HD on one internal HD, Tiger and (hopefully) FCP 5 on another HD. I'd like to use the first HD only for storage and eliminate Panther. So how do I install the 5 upgrade on the second HD?

Oooo, bad idea. Why do you have two different system drives? You're media HAS to go on a seperate drive from your OS and App. Boot from the FCP 5 drive, update it. Just pop the installation DVD in and update that version 5. Make sure the OS and everything on that drive is up to date. Boot from it and run Software Update. I'd just make that my system drive, totally erase the FCP HD drive and use that as my secondary/media drive.

Nope, I'm still not explaining well enough.

OK, I have Panther and FCP HD on one internal drive. I have Tiger on another internal drive. I have my media on a FW 800 external drive connected to a separate FW bus card. The FCP 5 upgrade is in the mail to me -- I don't have it yet.

When I go to system preferences, I can choose my startup disk. There's been no problem doing that. I choose 10.3.9 or 10.4.8 and restart.

I stayed with Panther/FCP HD because I was told that Tiger/FCP HD wasn't a stable combo. I also waited until the FCP 5 upgrade was cheap enough. Now I'm moving to an all Tiger setup, with FCP the last app to be upgraded.

So I can either leave FCP on the drive that's had Panther and upgrade it to FCP 5(not my top choice), or find a way to do a fresh install of 5 on the Tiger drive. Either way, once this is done, I'll get rid of the Panther OS entirely.

Yep- there's no reason to split up OS's like that unless you're looking for the pain. If you wish to retain FCP HD, rename the application to FCP backup in your applications folder and the installer should ignore it.

That was simply not true. Most of my students, and myself, and many of my local associates were using FCP-HD on Tiger just fine. There was never any truth to that myth.

Get on one OS, one version of everything, turn that secondary internal drive into a media drive. Simplify your life, enjoy.

In case anyone else wants to know about the crossgrade, the installer looks for an older SN. If it doesn't find one, it asks you to enter it manually.

My info about FCP HD/Tiger problems came from Larry Jordan himself. I guess YMMV.

I know Larry, great guy. Yeah, there was that going around, but I never saw it, never actually could even force a system to be unstable like that. I think Larry's the best, but on occasion, we disagree, this is one of them.
