(upgrading from 5.1.4)

any tips or pit-falls to watch out for when upgrading?

i have some projects started in 5.1.4
hoping this goes smoothly!

thanks in advance for any experience/advice!

It's a relatively painless upgrade. That said, it's generally a wise rule of thumb to try to complete major projects before a major upgrade, just in case.

And in addition, I would recommend clearing out the old version and doing a fresh install.

a colleague recommended clearing out the old version as well.
is this a necessary thing?

(i would be afraid of deleting needed files)

Some folks swear by this but it's really not necessary. The installer will handle all this for you. And yes it can be an issue if you delete the wrong files, and you'll never really find all of them anyway. There are literally thousands of files installed by FCP in many different places. Just deleting the apps in your applications folders is the tip of the iceberg.

so i did the install last night and it seems to have gone smoothly.

i have yet to go through all the possible hiccups, but so far so good!

I upgraded last year during editing of my SpyFest film because I needed the new features in Motion 3 to finish my SFX. Risky move, I know, but I copied all my project files and worked off of the copies, so I'd have my version 5 files untouched if I needed to go back. Everything worked out fine. Like any upgrade, back up, back up, back up! :)
