Updates to the indiFOCUS

Focus This!

DVXuser Sponsor
Just want to start off by thanking all of my customers. The indiFOCUS has been shipping for a little over two years now.

So what's new?

First off, the indiFOCUS---standard one with the friction wheel--and the indiFOCUSgear---with lens gears for 35mm SLR lenses---are shipping with the reduced backlash gearbox. Actually, they have been since late May. Two important benefits with these new gearboxes: 1, limited backlash, less than 30 arc minutes (half a degree). and 2, increased torque (they turn bigger lenses easier) These come factory manufacturered.

Secondly, by keeping costs down, there will be no price increase for the rest of the year. The indiFOCUS is $299, the indiFOCUSgear is $389. Gear that looks great on a web-site but is unaffordable does no film maker any good.

Third, the web-site is in the process of being updated. New photos, new lay-outs, online instructions and online demos all coming soon.

Finally, new gear.

indiBRACE
is a shoulder mount system for DV cameras. It is compatible with the indiRAILS and most other rod systems. It is fully adjustable. There is an included counter balance weighting system to get that 'just right' feel. The shoulder rest is adjustable fore and aft for balance, and the handles can be positioned closer or further out and in any angle the user desires. the indiBRACE weighs less than 4 pounds and ships with 2 pounds of counter weights. (These are galvanized washers attaching with a stainless steel bolt so that moisture won't damage them.) There is an optional bracket that mounts on the back to the counter weight hole...this allows brick style batteries, RF receivers, etc. to be strapped on-board, all helping to counter weight the camera. Padded grips round out the features. Priced at $99.

indiTRAC is our new portable track system. It ships with everything needed to make 10' of track except the PVC pipe or metal conduit. This is customer supplied. (PVC costs about $3 at Lowe's and costs about $35 to ship!) The spade bit, along with directions are sent so that the customer can drill the five holes as needed. The pipe snaps into special rubber attachments and is bolted tight. There are special threaded metal bumpers under each cross tie that allows the indiTRAC to be leveled, without shims, in under a minute. Each cross tie has two separate holes, one that allows industry standard 24.5" spacing of the pipe, and the other has 18" narrow spacing. There is a connection kit in the event that longer than 10' sections are desired. You can use 20' pvc pipe and no connection kit, or two 10' pipes and a $49 connection kit. Price is $189.

Finally, the indiCRUISER. This is a light weight dolly with a few unique features. It will fit 24.5" track, or 18" track by rotating it 90 degrees on the track. It also uses a special wheel system so that it can be used on hard floor or short nap carpet. When it is used on the floor, the wheels can be locked straight, or in one of two curved orientations---16' radius or 8' radius. The plywood top deck is mounted to the aluminum dolly frame by isolation bumpers to cushion the dolly. There are several camera mounting options. If you have a set of Bogen sticks, the 552 shoes can be mounted to the deck, allowing your sticks to be affixed to the deck via hard rubber boots. Also, the indiPED is available. (No pix yet). This is an adjustable camera pedestal where a ball mount fluid head attaches to the top of the indiPED. A camera operator can sit on a small stool, or there is a optional adjustable height stool. Both the indiPED and seat can be unbolted from the deck, allowing the dolly to easily be stowed in the truck of a car for transport. (It is 34 x 28 x 8 inches tall, weighing 25 pounds.) The indiCRUISER is $599. The indiPED is $189 and the seat is $79.

There will be package pricing on the indiTRAC and indiCRUISER.

Wow, you guys are really branching out and stepping up your game! If I decide on the letus then I'm gonna get the rails, focus and probably the brace.

My question is does the focus gear come with the original focus' rubber looking grey wheel as well for times when you're not using 35mm lenses? Because before you could buy the gear separately if you already chose the orignal grey wheel and when you did they came out to the same price as just the gear. So people get both focusing control options when they buy the gear then right? They might as well instead of buying it separately but having it come to the same price anyway.

Can these reduced backlash gearboxes be retrofitted to older units with the friction wheel? If so, I want them!

Thanks,

I am pretty sure they can be retrofitted, but I would check and make 100 percent sure.

and ecking. sometimes you can get away with using the friction wheel, depending on what lens your using and how stiff it may be.

First off, the friction wheel comes with the indiFOCUSgear. That way you can use it with the stock lens of the dv camera. The price difference between the indiFOCUS and indiFOCUSgear is the cost of the gear upgrade; so if you get a DOF adaptor in the future you can upgrade.

Yes, the gearboxes can be retrofitted. They 'look' exactly the same, just internally the gears are meshed tighter, giving reduced backlash and more torque.
