Updated Leopard OSX, now external drive issue's.

The apple forums are just too swamped, so maybe you guys can help.

This morning I upgraded Leopard to 10.5.7, updated Java and a few other updates through software update. Everything went fine, everything seems to be running as usual. Well, I have an SD (mini DV) video project I was attempting to log into my firewire 800 external drive, and ran into problems. Logged into this drive over ten times without issue's.

Turn on the drive, computer reads the drive. Open FCP and capture now window, FCP finds the camera and seems ready to log. Pressed play and capture now, and the system bogged down and couldn't keep up.

Stopped the logging and restarted computer and drive, then ran disk utility on the drive and it made a few repairs. Said the drive is good.

Tried to log it again, and I got about 15 minutes in and got a "File I/O Error", and the drive froze up. I eventually had to kill the drive without ejecting it first. I looked up the "File I/O Error" and came to this page which sounds similar.

Anyway, when I restarted the computer and the drive, I couldn't read the drive. I'd open disk utility and it would show the root of the drive and it's info, but not give me the name I gave it on the partition or any files. I started freaking out because there's info on this drive I can't afford to lose (no backup).

I took the drive out of the enclosure and plugged it into the computer through another plug and USB instead of firewire. Turn it on and I hear the drive spin up, but get NOTHING. Now I started really freaking out.

A minute passes, and the drive just magically appears on the desktop. Everything seems fine with it now, but I'm waiting to copy files from it till I know for sure it's not going to die on me.

I have a hard time believing this is just a coincidence that the drive gave me troubles the exact time I updated software for my computer. Any ideas here? what should I do? (besides an immediate backup of the drive)

additional info: Imac 24" core 2 duo, three week old OWC external enclosure with one three week old 1tb drive (the one giving me issue's), and one other drive in the same enclosure that still shows up through the firewire 800 port.

Dude... find ANOTHER computer and back up your freakin' drive before trying to use it again. " I can't afford to lose (no backup)" is oxymoronic... or, forget the "oxy"...

But you know that.
