Update: Super Deal on Lightworks 12.5 release with Boris FX & Graffiti bundled

Can someone give me a quick briefing on Lightworks?

I will download and play with a copy of course, but I am looking across the spectrum at NLE's right now. I am working in Premiere Pro CS6/ Production Premium CS6. I am looking for tools that an inexperienced assistant- high school students- could pick up and start to use, that also give me good 4k and multicam editing capability.

Is is it an easy interface to use and learn? How is the multicam support? It would be nice to have a tool that can "scale", from free to the paid versions.

Thanks! I'll go do my research now ..... :)

Cheers.

Multicam support is very good. As for easy, that's largely up to the person trying to lean it.

It's my experience that anyone who's trying to switch from any NLE to any other NLE has to first unlearn what they know to speed up learning the new one. But if you're not coming from another NLE, then it's not harder to learn than Avid or FCP "classic".

I personally love the flexibility of the interface and the organizational tools. It also has very good codec support. And the development team is very responsive.

Thank you! I was looking at it a bit yesterday. The screens at least seem pretty clean. Although the free version is limited to 720P, and the paid version isn't that cheap for someone who isn't ready to make a huge commitment.

I've been using Photoshop forever, since 1998 I think? I've been using Lightroom since version 1. I have CS6 Production Premium. Lately I've been dissatisfied with Adobe. The interfaces on all of the tools just seem so cluttered, needlessly complex. Things are scattered all over and half hidden, with way too much on a screen. The controls are so small and hard to "grab" with a mouse. The operations aren't really visually based, especially after using touch screens on my laptop, tablet, and phone.

Maybe I'll have a good look at Resolve, see what that is like for a new user? As much as I can- I am pretty firmly "imprinted" on how Adobe works, as you mentioned. ;)

I downloaded it, but I am still running Windows 7 on my desktop editing machine. I'm not eager to upgrade that to Windows 10, and Resolve needs at least 8 to run.

Thanks for the feedback! I may play with Lightworks for my own learning experience. Cheers!

I suggest downloading the free version and watching the video tutorials to start with Lightworks. They have a tutorial demo project you can download to play with too.
It doesn't need nearly as much computing power to run efficiently as Resolve. I use Resolve for CDNG raw processing and fine grading, but find the editor to be pretty clunky by comparison.
Lightworks runs best with broadcast grade all i-frame codecs. Low end highly compressed codecs take a lot of ram and CPU power to process efficiently.
Lightworks works best with keyboard commands and a jog shuttle controller like the Contour Shuttle Pro 2. It is not that hard to learn the basics, but it is a different paradigm, more similar to film editorial processes than what is typical of video NLE's.
Best media management and project organization tools in the business.

Thanks Razz16mm!

I appreciate the insight on both.

I did watch the Lightworks videos, I'll try the demo project. And I have a Contour Shuttle 2! :)

I am doing stills and video for a 25+ person high school music group. It's impossible to do good stills and video at the same time. So I want to get some of the high school photography and video students involved. As camera operators, editors, etc.

I have only really used Adobe CS6- Premiere, AE, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. plus Lightroom, and previous versions, for the past 10+ years. Time to explore other tools a bit.

Thanks again!
Michael
