I'm editing on Final Cut Pro 6. My final out put would be for DVD or internet. I want to update some of my older work for my reel. The highest aspect ratio I was looking for was 720p.
It's also something I would like to know how to do, if it's possible...
I use a plugin from Red Giant Software, Instant HD. It gives me good results.
In FCP, you can scale the video by simply importing the NTSC clip on a 720 timeline and just raise the scale. This will obviously soften the picture and sometimes bring Jagged edges. You can add antialising in the filters section and add some sharpening, but its a trial and error process.
You can also go to media manager and do the conversion to your desired format, or even compressor. However, I prefer the results I got with Instant HD. Worth the price.
I actually had great results with using Compressor. I had done it in AfterEffects for a while, but did a blind test with a DP I know and he chose my Compressor version over the AE version.
Not at my compressor machine, so I can't export a droplet for you... but when I am (two weeks or so) I'll be happy to send you my version.
Why upres? DVDs are standard def...uprezzing SD to HD, then back to SD again will make it look like poop. And going to the web, 720x480 is plenty big...my HD web videos are typically smaller than that.
