unwanted "ghosting" effect. any idea?

I'm capturing footage for rotoscoping, and I'm having a lot of trouble with the footage, because I'm getting a sort of "ghosting" effect. Let me explain:

I'm going through my footage frame by frame. And it's moderately fast paced footage. And each frame also shows the NEXT frame in the footage (though the opacity is lowered). It's as if the two frames are running together (though it's not the "frame blending" setting).

Is this an issue with how I captured it? How I shot it? Etc? I shot it in 24p, and captured it in Vegas, exporting it out as uncompressed DV footage.

Any assistance is muchos appreciated.

Sounds like it maybe how it was shot. At only 24fps, you can't pan too fast or the image will skip. There is a list of rules for shooting with 24p that most cinematographers live by. This actually highlights one of the benefits of 29.97/60i in that it can be panned and moved quicker without having ghosting problems.

Another possibility is that maybe the pulldown is still in.

Best,
Andy

Should I perhaps double check my capture settings? Could that take care of it at all? Or was I perhaps shooting at the wrong shutter speed?

I'm pretty sure i had the iris all the way open.

This kind of thing is "usually" the result of an incorrect interpretation of the pulldown cadence.

Are you exporting from Vegas at 24? 23.976? 60i w/ pulldown? Was it shot 24p or 24PA? What kind of camera?

Try importing your original footage in AE and see if there are the same issues after AE has a go at removing the pulldown. If it looks ok, you always have the option of making your changes in AE, rendering, and using only what you need back in the original Vegas timeline.

It was shot at 24p, and if I had to guess, I bet the timeline is 23.976, or maybe even 29.xxx with whatever pulldown it applies to 24p.

i'm shooting w/ a DVX100

Figured out the problem. I rendered out an uncompressed AVI at 29.97whatever the number is...when I changed it to render at 23.976 using 3:2 pulldown, it removed the ghosting....
